History
Just west of the 1887 “Heinlenville” Chinatown colony, which comprised the block surrounded by Sixth, Seventh, Taylor, and Jackson Streets, Japantown began as boardinghouses for Japanese men.
Japantown’s population was mostly men lured by agricultural or general labor occupations. An increasing number of women arrived as picture brides in the early 20th century. Local establishments for food and clothing emerged as families began to form.
Japantown is defined as an authentic ethnic neighborhood and is also home to a number of traditional Japanese eateries. This region was designated by the California State Legislature as one of the last three historical Japantowns in the United States.
