San Jose de Guadalupe was the first non-mission parish erected in California for the benefit of Spanish settlers as opposed to the Mission Indians in 1803. (Ohlone). The Alameda, which was part of the ancient El Camino Real, connected Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe with Mission Santa Clara. 1818 and 1822 earthquakes wrought damage to the original adobe construction.
The church was reconstructed in 1846 and consecrated in the same year. It underwent a third renovation in 1869 but was destroyed by fire in 1875. A temporary church was built, and in 1877 the fifth church was constructed, which was completed in 1884. A large dome was added, which was finished in 1885.
The church, which intended to become the cathedral for the new Roman Catholic bishop of San Jose, underwent a substantial refurbishment in 1981. The church was raised to cathedral status in 1985, awaiting renovation completion in 1990. A few blocks south, it supplanted Saint Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish as the cathedral of the diocese. The cathedral was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1997 by Pope John Paul II.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a California Historical Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
There are 2 plaques just inside the entrance of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph. Joseph’s Bible quotes are found on top of the inside walls of the church, which are from the Vulgate about Joseph.
