More than 45,000 children are served annually by the San José Museum of Art, making it the largest supplier of arts education in Santa Clara County. The permanent collection concentrates on contemporary art by artists from the West Coast of the United States, with an increasing concentration on Pacific Rim art. The collection contains around 2,600 works of art in a range of mediums, including sculpture, paintings, prints, digital media, photographs, and drawings.
Under the direction of Susan Krane, the San Jose Museum of Art had important exhibitions for the painters Leo Villareal in 2010 and Richard Misrach, Guillermo Galindo, and Tabaimo in 2016. The museum featured a large-scale solo exhibition of Vietnamese photographer Dinh Q. Lê in 2018.
Later that year, the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) presented Other Walks, Other Lines, an exhibition of international artists “who examine not only where we walk, but also how and why,” including works by Dutch artist Lara Schnitger and a piece commissioned by the museum from Filipino artist Lordy Rodriguez.
The San Jose Museum of Art framed 2019 as “the year of visionary women artists,” according to The Art Newspaper, with shows by Jay DeFeo and Catherine Wagner, as well as major exhibitions by artists Rina Banerjee and Pae White.
As of 2019, the San Jose Museum of Art’s permanent collection contains 2,600 works of art, a number that has increased over time.
