The Winchester Mystery House was previously the home of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a substantial share of the Winchester Repeating Arms empire. Sarah relocated from New Haven, Connecticut, to San Jose, California, shortly after her husband’s passing. There, she purchased an eight-room farmhouse and began the world’s longest home renovation, which lasted until Sarah’s death on September 5, 1922.

Mrs. Winchester, who was haunted by the ghosts of Winchester rifle victims, designed the Victorian mansion with many strange and intriguing elements. The initial eight-room farmhouse expanded into the world’s most remarkable and expansive home from 1886 to 1922. The Winchester Mystery House was built at a cost of $5 million in 1923, or $71 million in today’s currencies.

The Winchester Mystery House has been open to the public since 1923 and offers daily guided tours of the 160-room Victorian home. Now offering 2 tours daily, the Mansion Tour and the Walk with Spirits Tour, in addition to a popular Halloween Tour in the fall. For Axe Throwing, Group Tour Rates, Special Event Rentals, and Weddings.
